Mr Blue Sky and other random backup work

Completism is probably a sickness, but I've been seeking out the songs where KY does backup and guest piano. Have people checked out the Bowie tracks - "A Better Future" and "Slip Away?" I only like Bowie once a month, but I thought they were quite good, and KY's vocals add depth though they are very unlike her usual style - soft and low (and fairly far down in the mix). I wouldn't have recognized her without prompting.
As for the ELO cover, "Mr Blue Sky" with Visconti and Richard Barone - there's a lot of talent in the room, and it overwhelms (and perhaps deliberately brutalizes) this slight little song - but if you haven't heard it yet, die-hards will thrill to the break around 2:20, when Kristeen unexpectedly jumps into an INHUMANLY HIGH operatic recitation of the title phrase. Only dogs can hear the end.
All of these things are on itunes (search by title; "Mr Blue Sky" is erroneously credited to someone called "Tony Visonti") and I'm slightly too lazy to take the DRM off my copies at the moment. Here they are on YouTube, though.

I wonder if KY has done any more backup work, credited or un...the Bowie tracks certainly show an ability to vanish into someone else's song which you would hardly expect from the author of "Incubator."

Wow.  Awesome.  Thanks! :D

OK, she was "unrecognizable without prompting" for a reason...that voice wasn't her. There is a lady down there somewhere in the mix (okay...so on one of the tracks, I was taking that fact on faith, too) but it is not the lady we know of.
.
KY's Bowie songs were I Took A Trip On A Gemini Spaceship and I've Been Waiting For You, and she played piano on Slow Burn. Will try to dig those up on youtube once I am not incredibly annoyed that, thanks to no editing or post deletion capability, I will now be gratuitously wrong about this forever and ever. Oh, well, enjoy the irrelevant Bowie tracks.
.
I got the false info from kristeenyoung.de and the true info from KY on myspace. She also said she didn't have much to do with the ELO cover beyond doing the vocal.

OK, now I feel obnoxious for whining about editing/post deletion capability. I wish I could edit that post (quelle ironie)
.
Oh well, people have made bigger fools of themselves than I did today.
.
Now I'm going outside (really, I'm literally going outside).

Thanks Rachel for posting these. I, myself, am a complitest (and am truly prone to obsession) and thereby have dug myself a little KY hole. There I thrive on the albums and delight in all the other stuff.
I love the things that nobody really talks about (for reasons unbeknowest to me). Stuff like "The Last Thing You Need to Hear"; a truly moving example of her writing, and ability to bridge the band/spoken word gap which is a feat attempted and failed by many modern artists. Stuff like Nov 9th and WaterWorks, an example of her as a teen, her seemingly life-long talent... plus the songs are so darn cachy. Stuff all the way down to her work with Morrissey (of which I wish I had acapellas of), her "Conversation Piece" cover, and live shows (which I wish I had more of). And I really love "Mr. Blue Sky". Oh god, and "Rotting on the Vine" (which, also, wasn't much of her doing [though "Skelletons" is probably one of my favorite songs ever], but the remix is nice). So it's nice to see other people taking interest in the side stuff.
And don't worry, we've all made fools of ourselves (me usually TO Kristeen herself [which I could kick myself for, I mean honestly... I try WAY too hard and the letters seem nice when I send them but overly-obsessed, overdone, and kinda creepy when I reread them]).

Gemini Spaceship or possibly craft (really cool, sounding like an unearthly synth)

Waiting For You (I hear an actual voice-y synth but not KY to be honest - my ability to parse out KY's voice is plainly compromised today, tho)

Slow Burn
I find myself actually really liking this album now.
Thank you for saying that, p_x, I think we've all made fools of ourselves to her from time to time. The modern MySpace technology makes that kind of stuff easier than ever. And yes, I specifically enjoy KY spoken word as well. I don't know anything else about it whatsoever.

Yeah...it's absolutely amazing what's up on YouTube these days. A surprisingly good way of at least hearing music that you can't find anywhere else. People are doing the good work by putting up these tracks. I recently found a Dubliners song I knew and loved years ago that I still can't track down in any kind of purchasable form...just for kicks, actually:

(Sorry if you just can't stand folk music - I realize this image is PURE Folk Music, so you're soaking in it even if you don't click the link...)
"A Bunch Of Red Roses" (from a Sean O'Casey play; later the source of the first Pogues album title). Ronnie Drew...how many rocks did he have to chew to get that voice? And it just keeps getting lower.
Anyway, digression over: "Untitled!" I so value my terrible mp3 capture of that song. - "You can't believe a thing I say, especially when I tell you to go away."

Same here. Hopefully she's forgotten whatever I rambled to her in person. I kind of have. That was embarrassing..........................

Are you guys totally pumped to go see 'em or what?!

I love clothes and visual style, but always choke on the day of something important, so I eventually just started making notes in advance when I came up with an outfit that seemed right.
Something about this conversation just really made me miss my favorite outfit of all time, in which I have seen ky at some point...all of its parts except the scarf were physically destroyed in awful washing or moving accidents. Oh dear.

Oh, good. Now I don't feel so weird about honestly pondering what I will wear. I'll probably have to go shopping. Thrift store, ho!

Completerists,
Does anyone have/heard Basilisk? Not me...

No, but I dug around and found a Collaborateur fansite on MySpace:

It appears that they are no longer around. Their vocalist, Larissa Dalle, seems to be going strong though:

(I found her blog and photo site as well, and some stuff that mentioned her playing for/with KY several more times.)

So anyway, a brave soul could start with the MySpace.

Here's a copy of Basilisk from the "Night Times Auralzine" disc.  Kristeen also has a song on there called "untitled"
