I was doing research for work on "orphan films" (films that have been abandoned by their copyright holders, or otherwise fallen into neglect). One of the articles I read listed some definitions of "orphan" which I hadn't known about: in addition to a child who has lost both parents, it can refer to one who is deprived of protection, to a discontinued commercial item, or to a commercial item not developed because it is unprofitable. Dictionary.com backed this up, though with some scrolling. I thought the last two definitions were interesting in light of "Dead Wrong," and that all of them add depth to the album title.
Oh, wow. That is a very interesting find, Rachel! I love when deeper and deeper levels of an artist and their works are discovered.
Thanks for that!
The Orphans were also a low-class gang in 1979's THE WARRIORS (sorry---I couldn't resist!). That's actually some interesting info...
On KY's last blog (Humanifesto) she makes references to warrior-dom: " I am upright, sword in hand, body armor reapplied (why the hell did I ever shed it?) ready for battle." That had reminded me of a Patti Smith song, "I Am the Warrior" so I replied with the lyrics: "Heart to Heart, You'll always win."
So this is very interesting to hear there could be a possible tie between Orphans and Warriors. Thanks for the research.
Nick, that's exactly the kind of intriguing cult film reference upon which our nation was founded.
I have always thought the album cover of "The Orphans" represented them as the orphans Ignorance and Want benieth the robes of the Ghost of Christmas Present.
That's exactly what they represent! I don't know where it is, but KY was asked about the cover in an interview where she talked about her love for Dickens.

WHOAH. Wow. I never did get why that bi-sickle guy asked her 'bout her love for Dickens...
I'm dumb as fuck.
The song Protestant kinda made me think that the composition was maybe possibly slightly based on The Dream of Constantine...
Oh well!
Thank you.
I want to know about your Constantine theory, though, just for the sake of learning.
Well, if you haven't looked it up; Constantine converts to Christianity before the battle
at the Milvian Bridge. This "Christianity" later becomes the basis for the Catholic church.
Also, the vision contains the Chi-Rho symbol which was to adorn the shields of his soldiers; makes me think of the KY diamond glyph on pins(mini shields[?]) given away at shows.
A KY giving up her pagan ways(God"s") before launching her world-conquering campaign: the album and tour...
Just fun association...
Earlier, I remember reading some reviewer's comments saying that he felt that the use of a lap-top would date the cover. This made me think that the use of it was supposed to symbolize a modern trinket/weapon(smallpox really isn't so effective these days...); the robed figure making think of a missionary or such.
But now, it must be that it is "Ignorance" self-educating itself.
Or maybe not.

Oh my God I MUST HAVE ONE (or enough to make a suit out of).
I'm sure they'll have 'em at the shows. Jeff just handed me like, 5. It rocked!
